Reminder: March 2nd is Old Stuff Day
Posted on February 23, 2011 | 5 CommentsThere’s only one week left to prepare for the infamous holiday: Old Stuff Day! For those of you who aren’t already in the know, March 2nd is internationally reknown as “Old Stuff Day.” Ok, words like “infamous” and “internationally reknown” might be a bit of an exaggeration–certainly it’s not quite as popular as holidays like Christmas or New Year’s, but I assure you, the day really does exist. And this year, the entire blogging community has a chance to participate. How, you ask? Simply by taking a look back at some of your own classic blog posts, dusting them off,... -
Starting a Blogging Movement: Old Stuff Day
Posted on February 14, 2011 | 40 CommentsAlthough, for most of us, it’s a labor of love, blogging is actually a fair amount of work. The reward for our efforts is often a post we can be proud of and, with any luck, it receives some attention from the rest of the community. Unfortunately for most posts, that attention tends to be short-lived. A short time after it’s displayed, the average post falls off the blogrolls of the community and into the realm of obscurity, often never to be seen again. There’s good reason for this: after all, readers will only find posts interesting if they can... -
Why Doesn’t Warhammer39999 Link to Your Blog?
Posted on January 31, 2011 | 22 CommentsOne of the best ways to increase traffic to your blog is to get your name out there. A simple way to accomplish just that is to have more people linking to your site (for a list of other ways, check out my post on increasing traffic to your blog). When I created this blog, my intent with my blogroll was to create a list of blogs that I like. Now, I frequently peek through popular blogrolls like those on Ron’s From the Warp and the Bell of Lost Souls, and read blogs of all sorts, but those that consistently caught my eye,... -
How to Increase Traffic to Your Blog (Part 3: Measurements)
Posted on January 17, 2011 | 16 CommentsThis past week, we’ve been working on basic steps to increase traffic to your blog, starting by improving your content, and by networking. For our third and final piece on the topic, today we’ll discuss measuring that traffic. This concept is so basic that it really should have come first in the series–since you can’t know whether or not you’ve increased anything unless you know where you began. The Importance of a Baseline A “baseline” is simply a reference point, and can apply to almost anything. It’s what we’ll use to compare against to determine whether or not anything has... -
Guest Bloggers Wanted
Posted on January 12, 2011 | 14 CommentsHave you wanted to contribute to blogging but don’t have the time (or gumption) to start your own blog? Or maybe you already have a blog, but it aren’t getting the amount of traffic you would like and it feels like a lot of work to keep it going. Well, have no fear, Warhammer39999.com is looking for guest bloggers. I’m looking to recruit at least one guest blogger to post regularly (or semi-regularly). Contributors must adhere to a few simple rules: Keep it Clean – No profanity, flame wars, or general badmouthing of other blogs/companies. Keep it Legible – Basic spelling... -
How to Increase Traffic to Your Blog (Part 2: Networking)
Posted on January 10, 2011 | 12 CommentsLast week, I began a mini-series on increasing traffic to your blog. In that article, I focused on how to do so through your content. This week, let’s take another look at how we can increase your viewership through networking. Networking is simply a term to describe gathering contacts. Some call it schmoozing, others simply refer to it as being social. In this post, we’ll go into the subtle forms of networking, which are akin to just being a good neighbor, through some more professional forms: to include advertising. Since this series is intended for people who are gamers first... -
How to Increase Traffic to Your Blog (Part 1: Content)
Posted on January 5, 2011 | 31 CommentsWhether your blog is a humble look at the progress you’re making in your hobby goals, or you envision your site as Mecca for bloggers everywhere, more traffic is always a good thing. More visitors can provide more inspiring comments to fuel your progress, or can inspire thought as to different viewpoints. This series of articles is designed to expand upon some simple concepts that can help increase traffic to your blog without a lot of effort. Nothing found within these articles is particularly revolutionary: Most of the suggestions are common-sense based, or come from various sources around the internet. This is... -
How Big is Your Blog?
Posted on December 13, 2010 | 13 CommentsEarlier this month, Brent from Strictly Average found the end of the internet. Well, technically, he simply ran out of space on his blogspot account, but to a blogger, that’s roughly equivalent to reaching the end of their own personal internet. What really happened is that he exceeded the total space available for his free account, and could no longer upload pictures to his site. It’s a real problem that could happen to anyone who has a blog, so it’s something you’ll need to address eventually: and it’s better to address it now than to wait until it bites you. Since... -
Disqussing Comment Options [sic]
Posted on April 26, 2010 | 3 CommentsI’ve tried a lot of plugins on my blog. Some of those, are quite good, others are dismal failures, but most are just mediocre. Every once in a while, there comes a plugin that really improves the quality of my blog, and Disqus is one such plugin. You’ve probably seen Disqus at other popular blogging sites, like the Bell of Lost Souls. I know I did, and I liked the features it offered, so I figured I’d give it a shot on my blog. So, what does this plugin do? According to the WordPress plugin: “Disqus … is a service... -
A Very Merry Unbirthday to Me: 6 Months Down
Posted on April 5, 2010 | 11 CommentsIt’s hard to believe that the blog is six months old now. Since I’m notorious for starting projects and burning out on them, I’m quite suprised at both the success it’s had(as modest as it may be) and my continued interest in updating it. So as a step back as to what’s been achieved*: 137 Total Blog Posts 497 Total Blog Comments 71 RSS Subcribers 24 Followers with Google Friend Connect (late start) 44,027 Total Page Views 17,177 Total Visitors from a total of 79 countries 9,810 Total Unique Visitors Total countries, states, locations… All in all, this is more than I’d have ever expected...
