Imperial Guard Archive

  •   Just over one month from the first post (closer to two months since the inception of the project), my Imperial Guard contingent has been completed*. You didn’t happen to notice the asterisk on that sentence, did you?  No?  Well, good… Yes, there is a big asterisk on the end, indicating that my sentence requires conditions to be true.  Those conditions are: “Finished” doesn’t include basing the models. It also doesn’t include weapon options or magnetization, as I still haven’t given any thought to how these guys will be arranged in squads and/or what they’ll actually be used for in...

  • A month ago today, I posted my first WIP status update on my Imperial Guard (lovingly entitled the Ultramar PDF–or planetary defense force).  It really seems like I’ve been at it much longer than that, but keeping track of progress is a big reason why I started this blog in the first place.  Despite the overwhelming number of models (105 for those who are keeping score), it didn’t seem like a chore because of the way I wind up painting.  Yes, I painted them as one giant assembly line, but when I got bored of painting, I simply set the...

  • I’ve been working on my Imperial Guard for the past month (ok, maybe a bit longer).  To keep me focused, I’ve been posting status updates as time goes on, which keeps me honest and (hopefully) motivated.  This week’s update is as follows: Since the last last update, I think I’ve made some pretty significant progress.  At that point, their khakis were finished, their bandoliers had one coat of brown, and their guns had three coats of red.  My intention was to move forward and to through a few coats of BLOO on them (read: blue for anyone who isn’t as...

  • So, I’ve been working on some Imperial Guard to go with my Ultramarines, and decided to paint them in a similar scheme and dub them the Ultramar Planetary Defense Force (PDF).  Earlier, I’d managed to get them assembled and slap enough bone colored paint on them to pass any GW painting standard (three color minimum!).  I’d also claimed that I was going to move on to painting their armor next, which turned out to be a lie. Well, not entirely.  If you look at the left side of the picture, you can see that I did actually start painting their...

  • A year ago I’d posted an entry on the Imperial Guard “weapon teams” that I’d painted up.  Of course, I use the term very loosely, as really I was just painting the weapons and the bases for those teams, and I’d even alluded to the fact that I wouldn’t be painting the guardsman until sometime in 2012. Well, 2012 hasn’t yet arrived, so I guess I’m actually working on these guys ahead of schedule!  The off-handed prediction that I’d be painting them by 2012 was really optimistic—given my propensity for procrastination, but recently I found myself cleaning up some Imperial bits...

  • Ok, another attempt at a 500 point IG list for our upcoming tourney: Troops: Veteran Squad (3x Flamers in Chimera) Fast Attack: Armored Sentinel Squadron (2x Autocannons) Armored Sentinel Squadron (2x Autocannons) Armored Sentinel Squadron (2x Autocannons) Unlike my previous attempt, this list obviously suffers from only having a single scoring unit, but it has more targets (all at av12–which is hard to beat in this format), and roughly comparable long-range firepower.  Sure, at first glance, the army doesn’t look grand; however, it does have something that many lists will have trouble with: av12 walkers.  Sure, they can throw off...

  • In continuing my brainstorming of 500 point forces, I’m taking a look at the Imperium.  What I’ve learned is that building an army with Imperial Guard at 500 poinits feels kind of like cheating.  It’s amazing how cheap and effective all of their units are, and how effective a force you can make on the cheap.  So, for my first foray into Guard armies at low points cost, I’m just going to go with a mechanized force full of scoring units.  No fancy tanks, no support batteries, just vets in vehicles: Troops: Veteran Squad (2x Flamers, 1x Melta, 1x Plasma Pistol) in Chimera...

  • I’ve been plagued with cans of Ultramarines Blue spray paint that just don’t work.  I must have ten cans of this in my garage which are mostly full, yet they refuse to spray and I can’t come up with a solution to breathe some life into them.  As a result, I’ve had to find a different means of basecoating my army.  I’ve used an airbrush in the past to some success, but the cost of GW’s paint pots is really getting out of control, so I’m looking for an alternative. I know some people prefer vallejo paints, or even the...

  • I’m not sure what about the Imperial Guard compelled me to get into the army.  Perhaps it’s the fact that they’re the unbeatable hammer army of the 5th edition century, or maybe it’s a vain attempt to get enough IG posts on my blog to qualify for Col Corbane’s Parade Ground blog list?  More likely it’s my long-time love of models I refer to as “crappers.” In previous editions, I’ve seen immense advantages to playing with screen units.  These disposable heros (or crappers, as I call them), are  purchased (and slain) in masses, but add a great addition to any...

  • Finally!  Pictures of our recent apocalypse game.  I’d originally wanted to write a detailed battle report for the game, but despite a small amount of help, I still can’t seem to get Titans to show up properly in Vassal 40k.  Well, the show must go on.  It’s been almost a month since the game, so my recollection is spotty, but lets see what kind of write-up I can muster from memory alone. Ultimately, this will develop into a long-winded write-up, so if you’re just looking for the goods, I’d suggest you check out the pictures and, if they interest you, read...
