Apoc Vacillite Campaign, Phase 2: Army Lists
Posted on August 22, 2011 | 2 CommentsThe amount of effort put into preparation for things certainly has a direct correlation to the quality of the end result. I’m sad to say that our last Apocalypse game (the second of the Vacillite campagin, for those taking notes) didn’t get as much preparation as it really should have. Luckily for me though, preparation isn’t the only requirement; sometimes just surrounding yourself with a great bunch of guys can elevate something from mediocre status to a great game, just the same. I don’t mean to say that I was completely lax in designing the game; just that I would have... -
Vacillite Campaign: The Armies of Apocalypse
Posted on April 18, 2011 | 2 CommentsTeams in this game were setup different than most games you’ve likely encountered, in that we had eight players, divided up into four distinct teams. I’ll go more into how four teams interact in a single game without making the game take any longer, but for now, we’ll just go over team selection and army compositions. If you recall from the original rules post, each army was given a single Force Organization Chart (FoC) and one Super-Heavy slot with which to make a 3000 point army. If you filled the FoC, you would be given another to use (Along with... -
To Sweep the Leg
Posted on April 12, 2011 | No CommentsCortana: “What….is that?” Gravemind: “I?….I am a monument to all your sins.” Greetings everyone! This is TheGraveMind, you might know me from “the back 40k”. If you don’t, allow me a quick intro. I’ve been playing 40k for about 5 years now, starting with Tyranids and this last year I started up a Marine force. I have an affinity for a fast moving style of army, with a strong close combat element. The Dark Eldar have been looking at me for a while now… but I made a deal with myself that if I get my Blood angels fully painted,... -
My Entry for Dave Taylor’s “Steel Legion” Contest
Posted on February 9, 2011 | 3 CommentsIn December of last year, Dave Taylor had a contest entitled “Cold Dark… and Steel Legion” which challenged his audience to craft a themed list for his steel legion force. Naturally, I entered, and was picked as one of the finalists, but alas, I didn’t win. I wasn’t hurt at all though, because this particular contest was really fun to participate in. So my list doesn’t drift away into oblivion, I thought I’d post it here, along with my underlying logic. Before we get too far, let’s get into the requirements. Dave was looking for a themed list that was... -
500 points of Orkzes
Posted on October 5, 2010 | No CommentsIn contniuing the breakdown of 500 point armies for the upcoming tourney, I’m turning my attention to greenskins. It would seem that they have a couple of advantages that other armies don’t have: Cheap Units (for massive hordes) Low cost, low armor vehicles that slip beneath the 33 armor cap Wound allocation games, courtesy of Nob bikers (or Nobz in general) That’s alot going for them, as to deal with them effectively, you need to deal with both mass infantry, as well as armored targets. This particular list I’ve been kicking around is based around the same concept as the... -
Landspeeder Storms at 500 points?
Posted on September 28, 2010 | 6 CommentsThis month I’ve been spending some of my free time coming up with various 500 point armies for an upcoming tournament (rules here). Since I haven’t delved into a suitable Space Marine list, I figured I’d give one a shot. One of my favorite units in the codex is the Landspeeder Storm. I’m sure this is partly because it’s an underdog in the book, as not many people seem to see value in it. The idea of reliably being able to put a powerfist into a first turn assault is nothing to laugh at… heck, first turn assaults in general... -
Tyranids at 500 points, Without Synapse?
Posted on September 23, 2010 | No CommentsThis month I’ve been spending some of my free time coming up with various 500 point armies for an upcoming tournament (rules here). Naturally, I’d like to play an army I already have, and since most of my blogging focus has been on ‘Nidz for the past year, I want to come up with a suitable list for them. A few posts ago, I came up with a list that comprised entirely of ‘stealers (both Ymgarl and normal), based upon the premise that Synapse is almost exclusively banned at this tourny–the only exception being Zoanthropes, and what good are bugs... -
500 Points of IGuard, Sentinel Style
Posted on September 16, 2010 | 3 CommentsOk, another attempt at a 500 point IG list for our upcoming tourney: Troops: Veteran Squad (3x Flamers in Chimera) Fast Attack: Armored Sentinel Squadron (2x Autocannons) Armored Sentinel Squadron (2x Autocannons) Armored Sentinel Squadron (2x Autocannons) Unlike my previous attempt, this list obviously suffers from only having a single scoring unit, but it has more targets (all at av12–which is hard to beat in this format), and roughly comparable long-range firepower. Sure, at first glance, the army doesn’t look grand; however, it does have something that many lists will have trouble with: av12 walkers. Sure, they can throw off... -
500 Points of IGuard
Posted on September 14, 2010 | 7 CommentsIn continuing my brainstorming of 500 point forces, I’m taking a look at the Imperium. What I’ve learned is that building an army with Imperial Guard at 500 poinits feels kind of like cheating. It’s amazing how cheap and effective all of their units are, and how effective a force you can make on the cheap. So, for my first foray into Guard armies at low points cost, I’m just going to go with a mechanized force full of scoring units. No fancy tanks, no support batteries, just vets in vehicles: Troops: Veteran Squad (2x Flamers, 1x Melta, 1x Plasma Pistol) in Chimera... -
500 Points of ‘Stealers
Posted on September 9, 2010 | 7 CommentsOne concern with the format of the 500 point army list (rules here), is that it doesn’t necessarily allow for balance across the codices. No where is that more evident than in the Tyranid codex. The original ruleset called for two rules that completely squashed the codex: No creature with more than 2 wounds. No invulnerable saves better than 4+. Between those two rules, all synaptic creatures were removed from the realm of possibility. Luckily, the rules have been ammended slightly, so that the invulnerable save rule has been removed. What this means for ‘Nidz is that they can at...
