  • In thumbing through Imperial Armor IV: The Anphelion Project, I stumbled upon the rules for a “containment fence,” and am completely sold.  For 25+ points it kills troops and vehicles, while protecting models behind it.  Granted, it’s ForgeWorld rules so it’d be hard to play in most games, but in our local Apoc games, it would work swimmingly. My problem is trying to find a suitable model.  I know that the Battle for Macragge had some nifty little field projectors (pictured above).  They’re a little small for my likes, but they’d work perfectly…if I had any…  Over the years, I’ve...

Is there a good “Forcefield”, or “Electric Fence” model?

  • This week’s poll is concerning Apocalypse and it’s acceptance (or lack thereof) amongst the 40k community.  I’ve managed to play three games of 40k this year since my son was born, and each of those games happened to be an Apoc game. I would’ve said that was by coincidence, but when I think about it, it’s most likely not.  The anticipation of an upcoming Apoc game far surpasses that of a standard game to me.  I’m sure this is because they happen less frequently overall, have so many cool models that you otherwise never get to see, and just have...

  • It seems that I don’t play normal games anymore, instead just playing a few Apoc games per year.  This past weekend was no exception.  Our local gaming club had one of it’s three annual Apoc games, and I managed to attend.  The rules were pretty typical, except for the usual limitation of superheavies/titans was lifted, and replaced with “no more than 1 D weapon per model.”  Complete rules can be found in this thread. Many of the standard players were in attendance, with a couple of relatively new faces.  Attendees and army choices can be found below in the recaps...

  • In our second game of the vacillite campaign, it didn’t look good for the Xenos players as we were almost completely tabled.  Luckily, we  were able to hold the Infirmary and thereby bring a few key units back to life at the end of the game in order to give them veteran abilities. If you’re already lost, I suggest you check out this earlier post on using veteran abilities in Apolcaypse games.  Once you get caught up, below is a list of the units that “survived” the battle and what abilities they received: Imperial Team (two abilities earned for each): Cole’s Grey...

  • The inspiration for this week’s poll comes from a random thought that I had about thematic games.  A problem with our recuring Apoc “campaigns” is how to tie each game together to be more than just a loose grouping of games.  The other issue I have in coming up with a narative is trying to make logical teams out of the armies that are brought to our games.   For instance, in a typical game, we have: Space Wolves / Blood Angels Blood Angels Tyranids (multiple) Imperial Guard Orks Space Marines (vanilla) Tau Then there are a couple of us that...

  • I made a comittment to try to host three Apoc games per year, and in an attempt to keep them interesting, I’ve taken to calling each year a campaign.  Since we have relatively few games to base each campaign off of, I’ve been looking for ways to tie them together a little better.  First, I included things like story arc (for instance in the Vacillite Campaign, the arc revolves around discovery and collection of a mysterious new mineral).  Another thing I’ve started to work into the theme is that of veteran abilities. Luckily, GW has already laid the ground work...

  • What?  You didn’t know there was a problem with Accelerate Deployment?  I suspect that might be due to the fact that you probably don’t know what I’m referring to. Accelerated deployment is a term that I came up with to help expedite Apocalypse games in general.  Specifically, I was referring to deployment for a four sided Apoc game (see complete rules description here), which by using default methods for deployment, allowed for a savings of up to 100 minutes for just deployment.  The pertinent rules are as follows: Teams can bid between 0 and 20 minutes for deployment.  Ties will...

  • I’ve been toying around with the idea of time management with Apocalypse games for some time, ever since the first Apocalypse event I attended locally, wherein they set an arbitrary time limit on phases (I believe of 20 minutes).  It seemed pretty obvious that imposed time limits helped provide structure to a pretty chaotic environment, and helped keep things progressing throughout the day.  The sticking point is that players seemed to lack a sense of urgency, which resulted in a great game lasting a measley 3-4 turns.  Without committing to a multi-day affair, it’s nigh impossible to get a full game...

  • The game was a little more haphazardly thrown together than previous events in the Vacillite Campaign; which is not to say it was equivalent to a pick-up Apoc game.  True to form, it had some new twists we hadn’t experienced before, and some of the classic elements that have come to be staples in our in-house format. The new additions to the format this time were the inclusion of a chess clock for timed turns (more about that in a future post), and the inclusion of an off-site space-hulk themed board called “The Okassisarian Cruiser.”  Essentially this was supposed to...

  • The amount of effort put into preparation for things certainly has a direct correlation to the quality of the end result.  I’m sad to say that our last Apocalypse game (the second of the Vacillite campagin, for those taking notes) didn’t get as much preparation as it really should have.  Luckily for me though, preparation isn’t the only requirement; sometimes just surrounding yourself with a great bunch of guys can elevate something from mediocre status to a great game, just the same. I don’t mean to say that I was completely lax in designing the game; just that I would have...
