- I think they're ok every once in a while. (8%, 3 Votes)
- They could be cool, but they're so inherently unbalanced and time consuming. (19%, 7 Votes)

Happy Halloween (now with Demonic Baby Fetus!)
Posted on October 31, 2011 | No CommentsIf you were drawn to read this post simply because of the title, then you should probably go seek mental help. But as long as you’re here, won’t you stop and take a gander at my latest ghourd approximations? In 2006, I gave up carving real pumpkins in favor of styrofoam equivalents that can be purchased from local arts and craft stores (such as Michaels or Jo-Ann fabrics). My original theory was that I spend time creating these works, and would like to have them immortalized so I can enjoy them for years to come. Well, five years into the... -
The Military of Ultramar – Finished!
Posted on October 24, 2011 | 10 CommentsJust over one month from the first post (closer to two months since the inception of the project), my Imperial Guard contingent has been completed*. You didn’t happen to notice the asterisk on that sentence, did you? No? Well, good… Yes, there is a big asterisk on the end, indicating that my sentence requires conditions to be true. Those conditions are: “Finished” doesn’t include basing the models. It also doesn’t include weapon options or magnetization, as I still haven’t given any thought to how these guys will be arranged in squads and/or what they’ll actually be used for in... -
Is there a good “Forcefield”, or “Electric Fence” model?
Posted on October 19, 2011 | 6 CommentsIn thumbing through Imperial Armor IV: The Anphelion Project, I stumbled upon the rules for a “containment fence,” and am completely sold. For 25+ points it kills troops and vehicles, while protecting models behind it. Granted, it’s ForgeWorld rules so it’d be hard to play in most games, but in our local Apoc games, it would work swimmingly. My problem is trying to find a suitable model. I know that the Battle for Macragge had some nifty little field projectors (pictured above). They’re a little small for my likes, but they’d work perfectly…if I had any… Over the years, I’ve... -
Ultramarines Dice
Posted on October 17, 2011 | 15 CommentsLast spring, some guys from the Bolter & Chainsword forums got together to do a custom order for dice. Naturally, since it was a group of Ultramarines players, the dice pattern design that was finally settled on was the classic “Omega” pattern, or as most players know it: the iconic Ultramarines “U.” I learned a few things in this order that I thought I’d pass along to the teaming masses of fans I have. Ok, but seriously, there are some things that you should be aware of when ordering custom dice, so here goes: I’m sure there are plenty of places that... -
New Poll: Your Thoughts on Apocalypse
Posted on October 14, 2011 | 5 CommentsThis week’s poll is concerning Apocalypse and it’s acceptance (or lack thereof) amongst the 40k community. I’ve managed to play three games of 40k this year since my son was born, and each of those games happened to be an Apoc game. I would’ve said that was by coincidence, but when I think about it, it’s most likely not. The anticipation of an upcoming Apoc game far surpasses that of a standard game to me. I’m sure this is because they happen less frequently overall, have so many cool models that you otherwise never get to see, and just have... -
Ultramar PDF – A Light at the End of the Tunnel
Posted on October 12, 2011 | 5 CommentsA month ago today, I posted my first WIP status update on my Imperial Guard (lovingly entitled the Ultramar PDF–or planetary defense force). It really seems like I’ve been at it much longer than that, but keeping track of progress is a big reason why I started this blog in the first place. Despite the overwhelming number of models (105 for those who are keeping score), it didn’t seem like a chore because of the way I wind up painting. Yes, I painted them as one giant assembly line, but when I got bored of painting, I simply set the... -
Poll Results: Prebuilt Armies
Posted on September 30, 2011 | 9 CommentsOur last poll concerned the idea of playing a game of 40k with armies that were built for you. The idea here was that I wanted to balance the teams of an Apocalypse campaign that I’d host by supplying both the army lists and the models for those teams. That way, everyone could just show up and play without worrying about list creation, model purchases, or whether their team would be up to snuff. The results of this poll, more than any other I’ve run so far, surprised me, and you can see them below: Of the four available answers,...
